Evan Almighty - A comedy of biblical proportions

Popularly dubbed Bruce Almighty Two, the sequel to Jim Carrey's heavenly acquaintance treads a similar path here, propelling an ordinary if not flawed man in his quest for self-improvement.

Whether as a viewer you are about to watch a self-assured Congress man on his route to mid-life mayhem or a miraculous intervention which helps him change the world however, will prove to be a matter of individual interpretation.

But you can guarantee that whatever direction you are minded to sway, it will determine whether or not you get to grips with and enjoy this biblical comedy or whether you rapidly lose interest and quickly position it as a cinematic flop.

There's no Bruce this time round, so no Carrey either - in fact you don't need to have seen the initial production at all to quickly tap into what is ultimately a re-hashed version of the former.

Instead the lead here goes to Steve Carell as Evan Baxter and while he is neither as manic or energetic as Carrey, he does manage to pull of an entertaining role as the film quickly adapts to its focal 'Noah and the Ark' theme.

We tune in as Evan, a Buffalo newscaster is elected to Congress. His election campaign may have used the slogan 'Change the World' but as he ships his family to Virginia to start his new life, the elevated character is not quite sure how his plans are going to formulate or how literal his slogan is about to come.

Yet as he prays for moral guidance, it's not long before the new politician experiences divine intervention in the most unusual of ways.

First he wakes up to GEN 6:14 ('make thee an Ark') flashing on his alarm clock, before coming across an anonymous house warming present, a box filled with tools.

The next strange arrival is a lorry load of gopher wood. As he becomes increasingly puzzled and frustrated, the film becomes equally as funny and eventually the familiar Morgan Freeman appearing as 'God' enters the fray commanding Evan to build an ark in the same fashion as Noah. He must fill it with animals to protect them against the onslaught of an eminent flood. And so, the mission to change the world is to be put to the test.

Humour quickly sets in when rather than believe he has just received a commandment from Heaven, Evan blames stress, his elevated status and even a mid-life crisis for the strange goings on. But as Freeman continues to pop up in the most unlikely of places, Evan is soon forced to face the reality of the task at hand.

And with a beard that refuses - despite frantic attempts - to be shaven and a head of hair that refuses to stop growing, Evan can't escape what is happening to him and concedes by plunging himself into the challenge that is building an ark and saving Virginia from the September 22nd mid-day flood.

The film becomes increasingly entertaining as we watch a man with absolutely no DIY skills, let alone enough mastery to build a life saving vessel, engage the challenge.

The threat of a mid-life crisis is enough for Evan's family to initially abandon him, but a visit from God, persuades wife Joan to return just as the story is making international news.

Due to his abnormal behaviour Evan is suspended by Congressman Long (John Goodman) and later learns he has built a dam over a nearby lake to cut corners to save business money.

As September 22 approaches with clear skies, we await abreath to see whether Evan's self-completed ark will indeed change the world or whether it will make pit his public demise as the ultimate of all downfalls.

A comedy of biblical proportions, while not 'laugh out loud' funny from start to finish, there are enough funny moments scattered throughout to make this an entertaining trip to the cinema, particularly for the younger, more easily pleased viewer.

Perhaps not an Almighty hit but Evan knows?
