Irvinestown man Fergus McGirr has won an all expenses paid trip to a training camp in La Santa, Lanzarote.
Fergus was part of a team that competed in the Half Ironman 2007 in Groomsport, Co. Down recently.
Another Irvinestown athlete Christine McCann finished runner-up in the 4045 years age group in the gruelling event. Others to compete in the top class competition were Ewan Ballantine and Stephen Dickson.
Miraculously, conditions were perfect for those about to face the gruelling challenge of a long distance triathlon. A crisp, dry and calm day greeted those making an early start. Sunshine on still waters a welcome sight for any triathlete.
Hosted by Triangle Triathlon Club, Groomsport was the venue for the inaugural hosting of Northern Ireland's longest triathlon comprising a 1.9k sea swim, a 93k cycle and a 20k run over a testing multi-terrain route. With 80 starters from across the British Isles and as far afield as Norway, Spain and South Africa, this was to be a fascinating contest. From early morning, athletes filtered into the transition area making final adjustments to their equipment before being called onto the beach.
