The Coffey Cup is a name that is well known in local soccer circles.
This year's competition will take place at the Castle Park Centre Lisnaskea on Saturday, 28th July, kick off 12.00pm, followed by the presenting of trophies and a barbecue in Mac's Bar.
This trophy was first presented in 1939 by the Rev. Hubert Coffey who lived in the house now occupied by Fred Clarke in Castlebalfour and who later emigrated to Australia .
It has been the premier summer competition in Fermanagh, Tyrone and border counties and is indeed the only one to survive.
There was a gap between 1958 and 1964 when the Lisnaskea Club went out of existence after the departure of Robbie Benson to Australia. A committee was formed in 1963 and the competition was soon back to full strength. Probably the highlights occurred in the '70s and the early '80s when there were some memorable games between Clones and Lisbellaw resulting in huge crowds flocking to the pitch at Attybarran.
Rev. Coffey visited the town in 1971 and was delighted to see the trophy still being competed for. He subsequently authorised the President of Lisnaskea Rovers, Roy Kells, to purchase a new cup, which has been played for every year since. Rev. Coffey died in 2002.
This year, the Lisnaskea Rovers have decided to run the competition as a seven-a-side. Also clubs will be competing for the Bob Jardine shield as part of the competition. This shield was presented to the Lisnaskea Rovers Football Club by the Jardine family in memory of Bob whose sudden death in November 2006 stunned everyone in local football. Since he first arrived in Lisnaskea in 1959, he had become involved with the running of the Coffey Cup. Over the years, Bob became the heart and soul of the Lisnaskea Rovers Club and his contribution was immeasurable.
The Club would like to thank their official sponsors: S D Kells, Mac's Bar, Clarke's Quarries Ajax Betting, and Lisnaskea Autospares, as well as all those who supported the Club through the year.
