Five Enniskillen Lakelanders swimmers travelled to the Grove Pool, Belfast, on Sunday for the second meet of the Age Group Superstars. This series of galas is aimed at nine to 13-year-olds and Sunday's events were the gruelling 400m freestyle, the 200 IM (two lengths of each of the four strokes - butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle) and the two Skins events; the 50m fly and 50m backstroke.
In a Skins event, heats are swum off as normal to get the six fastest for the final. However, as all ages race together, only the oldest generally reach the final. The other results are posted according to finishing position in each age group but no medals are awarded for these. The final is then run as three races, swum in quick succession with only a few seconds' rest, with the slowest two competitors eliminated each time.
Twelve-year-old Courtney Wilson qualified in fourth place for the backstroke Skins final and finished the first race still lying fourth. She then had the Enniskillen supporters on the edge of their seats finishing second in a very close second race. She was moved into the middle lane for the head-to-head final and once the two swimmers turned after one length there was never any doubt that Courtney had the stamina to win as she gradually pulled ahead, taking a well-deserved gold.
Brothers, Kevin and Shane Murray had a busy day competing in all four events with considerable success. Shane was the only nine-year-old brave enough to tackle the 16 lengths of the 400m freestyle and was rewarded for his efforts by receiving the gold medal for that age group. He followed this up with a bronze in the 200 IM, a second place in the 50m fly and fourth in the 50m backstroke.
Kevin also took silver in the 11 years, 400m freestyle in a superb personal best time of 5.20.82. He took bronze in the 200 IM, finished first in his age group in the 50m fly and second in the backstroke.
Ten-year-old Sally Burrell, competing in her first 200 IM, stormed ahead of the field to win her heat convincingly and take silver in her age group in this 'heat declared' event. She also finished first in her age group in the 50m fly.
Ten-year-old Damhan Sanderson, who was back competing after a break in his training, was second in his age group in the 50m backstroke and sixth in both the 400m freestyle and 200 IM.
Next up on the competition calendar is a PTL v Swilly Seals in the Forum this Saturday night.
