After many years of Irvinestown success at A/B level, their 'C' Men's team finally made the breakthrough beating nearest rivals, Omagh, to take the title.
Final League Table
Pld Pts
Irvinestown 4 7
Omagh 4 5
Ballybofey/Stranorlar 4 0
The winning team is a mixture of youth and experience, the latter being provided by William Britton and it is indeed fitting that he should, at last, be on the receiving end of the silverware.
The youth was provided by three young men who seem to be improving with every outing - Liam McQuaid, James Duffy and Niall Allen.
OMAGH ............................................... 1
IRVINESTOWN ...................................... 3
The first two doubles matches were long drawn out affairs with both going to three sets. Irvinestown's Liam McQuaid and James Duffy lost to Michael McWilliams and Cathal Deehan, 6/4, 4/6, 7/5. However, William Britton and Niall Allen squared the match, beating David Logan and Geoff Hawkes, 3/6, 6/2, 6/3. Irvinestown ensured victory by taking both reverse doubles.
'C' LADIES - FINAL MATCH POSTPONED
The 'C' Ladies decider between Omagh and Irvinestown was set for last Wednesday but was postponed due to very bad weather. Ballybofey/Stranorlar and Lisnaskea complete their League schedules, the Donegal side beating Lisnaskea.
BALLYBOFEY/STRANORLAR ..................... 3
LISNASKEA .......................................... 1
Ballybofey/Stranorlar's Tracey Alexander and Donna McGroarty beat Lisnaskea's Una McKeogh and Maxine Leary at 1st doubles and the Donegal side repeated their success at 2nd doubles via Gillian Porter and Pat Bonner and Libby Armstrong and Doreen Armstrong. Lisnaskea's only point came through Una McKeogh and Libby Armstrong.
A/B Men's: Enniskillen and Ballybofey/Stranorlar to meet at the weekend. The final chapter in the A/B Men's League is due to be completed at the weekend with the game between the two title contenders, Enniskillen and Ballybofey/Stranorlar.
Enniskillen defeated Omagh and are now on eight points. Ballybofey/Stranorlar sit with seven points and a game in hand v Omagh, which they would be expected to win. If this came to pass, Ballybofey/Stranorlar would only need a draw against Enniskillen to capture the title.
ENNISKILLEN ....................................... 4
OMAGH ............................................... 0
Enniskillen won their penultimate match prior to the decider with Ballybofey/Stranorlar. Matthew McGann and John Slowey were first, beating Omagh's Andy Moore and Stephen Cuthbertson. This was followed by Adam Donaldson and Davy Thompson's win over Jimmy McCutcheon and Edwin Johnston. Both Enniskillen's wins were over two sets each, but the visitors gave a better display in the second series with Andy Moore and Jimmy McCutcheon losing 4/6 in the 3rd set and the 14th men's doubles ended closer, Stephen Cuthbertson and Edwin Johnston losing 6/7 in the 3rd.
