AN 18-year old A Level student at St Michael's College, Enniskillen, John Dooris, is recovering from injuries he sustained when he was knocked down by a van near the college last week.
The incident happened on the Drumclay Link at around 8.30am on Wednesday of last week, 27th January. At the time, John's injuries were not believed to be serious, but he was still off school yesterday (Tuesday) after feeling unwell when he went in on Monday for university placement interviews.
He is a son of Brendan and Rosaleen and lives in Windmill Heights.
Yesterday, his father reported that his son was 'fine' but that he was traumatised by the accident: "He was lucky and unlucky, unlucky to be knocked down and lucky to be alive."
John is a well-known Gaelic footballer, having played minor football for Enniskillen Gaels, the team his father played in goals for.
A police spokesman said enquiries into the accident were ongoing. He confirmed there was only one vehicle involved.
Meanwhile, Enniskillen SDLP Councillor, Frank Britton has called for a road traffic plan to be put in place at Drumclay Link to protect the students attending St Michael's and St Joseph's schools.
He commented: "The Drumclay Link area around St Michael's and St Joseph's College is absolute chaos in the evenings and in the mornings, with over 1,000 children emerging from, or going into, the various schools.
"The area is also congested with the cars of parents picking up their kids, with school buses and general through traffic. There needs to be more management of the area. It's not fair to leave the kids open and vulnerable to the traffic. There needs to be a road traffic plan. Our children deserve a lot better.
