The Erne Model Railway Club, which is based in Enniskillen, stage its annual exhibition and collectors' fair in St Macartin's Cathedral Hall this Saturday, 20th September, from 10am-5pm. The event is now in its 11th year.
Exhibitors and traders coming from all over, including clubs from Bangor, Dublin, Donegal and Sligo who will be exhibiting their layouts, depicting scenes from England, Ireland, North America and the Continent. The Erne club layout will once again be used to show trains belonging to club members. However, there will be much more than just trains to be viewed for exhibits of model cars, planes and tractors will also be on display.
Making a star appearance at this year's railway exhibition will be a range of magnificent Meccano models. Although Frank Hornby is more associated with model trains, he invented the very first pieces of the nuts and bolts system in 1898, with the name 'Meccano' appearing in 1907. Meccano has been responsible for many careers in engineering through firing the imaginations of children everywhere and showing how structures are created. It was truly interactive, long before the days of games consoles and the internet.
On show will be several spectacular showman engine models from the collection at Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum in Enniskillen, and an impressive fun fair, which has been created by Meccano enthusiast Ian Wilson from Tandragee. Several of the models were specially built at the Meccano factory in Liverpool and distributed as display models to shops in order to promote the product.
Traders selling new and second hand goods will use several stands to display a huge array of merchandise. These will include railway models and accessories, scenic material, die cast models and model cars.
Whatever your interests, the annual exhibition is sure to bring out the little boy (or girl) in you!
