A Newtownbutler motorist has been disqualified from driving for two months and fined £250 after admitting to police he had been doing doughnuts in his Toyota Corolla car.
Stephen James Green (28) from Cloughagaddy, Magheraveeley, Newtownbutler appeared before Fermanagh Magistrates Court charged with careless driving and driving with a defective nearside tyre on 11th November last year.
The court heard that, around 5.15pm, police were attending at a private residence 200 metres from Creagh Cross in Tempo when they heard the engine of a car revving loudly and tyres spinning from the direction of the crossroads. One of the officers looked out and saw a car coming from the direction of Creagh Cross. They stopped the Toyota Corolla car, being driven by the defendant and he admitted performing doughnuts saying it was just for the fun of it.
When the vehicle was inspected it was found to have a bald tyre.
Defending, Barry Lynam said his client accepted culpability when questioned at the scene by the officer and pointed out that the officer didn't see the offence but only heard engine and tyre noises. Mr Lynam said his client was attending Fermanagh College and also worked part-time with his father. Resident Magistrate Liam McNally said being in possession of a driving licence means you act responsibly on the road. 'The purpose of a driving licence is not to go out and do doughnuts at a crossroads'. Mr McNally said there had to be a disqualification in this case.
For careless driving a £250 fine and two month driving ban were handed down while for the bald tyre the defendant was fined £50.
