Winters picks up in the end

Fifteen of the 16 competitors returned for the final night of St Ronan's open singles tournament on March 1st.

In the first round, T. Gartland beat E. Rooney, D. Kettles beat M. Ferguson, S. Gunn beat PJ McCrossan, M. McGrade Snr. Beat R. Carroll, T. Beggan beat T. Moohan, S. Winters beat J. Morris and M. Hand beat M. Rutledge.

J McCabe got a bye as Danny McDonald could not attend.

In the quarter-finals, T. Gartland beat D. Kettles 8-7, S. Gunn beat M. McGrade Snr 14-5, T. Beggan beat J McCabe 11-7 and S. Winters beat M. Hand 9-8 after a tied end.

In the semi-finals, both matches were very close. S. Winters got off to a good start winning six shots in the first two ends against T. Beggan.

T. Beggan picked up four shots in the third and sixth ends to make it 11-8 to Winters.

T. Beggan picked up another two shots in the following two ends but Winters managed to get another one shot in the final end even though there were four shots against him, Winters won 12–10.

In the second semi-final, S. Gunn and T. Gartland were 3-3 after four ends and 4-4 after six ends. Gartland won two shots in the seventh end but S. Gunn rallied and won 7-6.

In the final game of the night, S. Gunn of St Ronan's was up against S. Winters of Latton. Winters picked up four shots in the first two ends while Gunn picked up one in the third. After six ends, the score was 6-2 to Winters.

Gunn was having no luck and Winters picked up four in the seventh end. Although Gunn picked up two more shots in the eighth end, Winters picked up another one to win the game and tournament by 11-4.
