There are just a few days to go before the Enniskillen 10K on 9th June so it's time to start thinking about your last minute preparations before the race. For some, this will be another run in a busy calendar, but for others this may be the first race of the year or perhaps life! We have, therefore, consulted a few experienced '10kers' for some last minute 10k tips.
If you have been in training, it's best to avoid running, or at least take it very easy, a couple of days before the race to keep your energy stores up. Have a healthy breakfast on Saturday but avoid eating anything more than a banana in the two hours before running.
Drink plenty of fluids sipping on a bottle of water just before the race is a good idea, especially if it is a warm day. With all these fluids remember to use the toilet facilities at the Lakeland Forum before starting, or the trees in Castle Coole will be in for extra watering!
Think about what you are going to wear also. Check out the weather forecast in the morning. In general, light clothing is best for running in. You should not need a sweatshirt when running in June if you have a supporter, throw it over to them just before the race, you will welcome it back afterwards. Avoid brand new trainers on race day; just wear a pair that you are comfortable in.
The weather forecast is sunny so don't forget the sun-cream.
The race starts at 2.00pm on Saturday so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there and avoid stress. There will be very limited parking space near the Forum so it may be best to get someone to leave you in or to walk or cycle there.
Remember, you will have to pick up your race number before the race, and it is a good idea to warm up before running also. There are enough commemorative T-shirts for all pre-entrants but be early to ensure you get the pick of the sizes. Late entry is available on the day (£13) but give yourself even more time for this some late entrants last year almost missed the start.
The race will start as quite a bunch. If you are not a fast runner, or are planning to walk, the back of the group is the best place to be to find your own 'space'. You will also avoid being in the path of those who are trying to win the race. When the race starts, try to avoid the temptation to go too quickly and wear yourself out. If you are not sure of your pace you may find it best to do the first half slow and then speed up in the second half when you feel up to it.
Avoid dehydration by taking fluids on at the two water stops along the route. There will be a water stop at approximately 3.5km and 7km.
Remember to leave a little energy for the 'lap of honour' back at the Forum! This particular few hundred metres did not appear on the map, which was sent out with your entry receipt, but is a very important place for many people to shine.
Lastly, supporters are great at the end of the race but a few along the course will give you a huge boost, so get as many friends and family out to cheer you and the rest of the runners along.
And most importantly, have fun!
