Waterways Ireland support Share scheme

Young people from Fermanagh and surrounding counties have been enjoying a fun-filled Summer programme of watersports, the Share Holiday Village Waterway Scheme at the Share Holiday Village near Lisnaskea.

The scheme is being supported by Waterways Ireland and has provided week-long, non residential opportunities for 150 young people to learn new skills in sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and swimming, and the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

"Despite the unseasonable July weather, support for the scheme has been fantastic with virtually all spaces filled", said a spokesman.

The scheme allows 7-16 year olds who would not normally gain the opportunity, for whatever reason, to participate in watersports.

"It is amazing", Chris Scott, Share's Marketing Officer remarked, "the number of children who live in Fermanagh who have not been out on the lough. The Waterway Scheme means they can not only have fun on the Lough but also learn to do it safely".

The scheme will continue throughout July and August and will conclude with a closing ceremony on Friday 24th August by way of a celebration of the participants' achievements.
