A new scheme, which has just been introduced in Fermanagh, aims to allow people with mobility difficulties a chance to enjoy the countryside.
With the help and support of Disabled Ramblers Northern Ireland (DRNI), and Shopmobility, a Ramblers Group has been established in the area, which hopes to promote rambling as an enjoyable outdoor activity.
One of the people instrumental in driving forward this initiative is Eileen Drumm, a local volunteer who explains she has liaised with Raymond King, from Shopmobility in Belfast, to make get this scheme up and running in Fermanagh.
The rambles are made possible with the use of powered scooters, provided for each ramble by Shopmobility, and consist of circular or linear routes through interesting and beautiful countryside.
During the rambles, participants will be encouraged to develop an awareness of plant, bird, animal life as well as finding out more about historical and/ or artistic sites.
The group recently met for their second ramble around the beautiful grounds of Castle Archdale Country Park.
Eileen Drumm explains for the first ramble they had 14 people on board, with eight of these being scooter users. "The Ramblers Group is for both disabled and non-disabled people and everyone (friends and helpers) are very welcome to come along," says Eileen.
Eileen explains potential users must be able to demonstrate their ability to handle a scooter safely, or have a scooter driving licence.
Shopmobility scooters are available at Outdoor Centres in 10 locations across Northern Ireland. But, as yet, there is no base for the small scooters in Fermanagh, therefore they have to be transported here from Belfast.
A typical ramble with cover distances of between 5 - 8 miles and start about 11.00am. Following a briefing, the ramblers with depart, along with any walkers and whoever has organised the ramble.
Talking about the experience, Eileen , describes the rambles as, 'fantastic'. "They are really enjoyable. Some people walk and some take their own scooters" she says.
People with their own scooters, or pushed or powered wheelchairs, are welcome..
There is no membership fee to join Disabled Ramblers Northern Ireland (DRNI) and no charge is made for the use of equipment.
sHowever, there is a small non-refundable contribution towards administrating each ramble.
