A 32-year-old Kinawley woman who was caught drink driving faces a £250 fine and has been disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months following a recent sitting of Fermanagh Magistrates Court.
Resident Magistrate Liam McNally heard how at approximately 3.20am on Saturday, 12th May, the defendant, Sinéad McBrien, from Derryclegna, was driving a Vauxhall Vectra erratically along the Coach Road, Arney, when she was stopped by police. Her speech was slurred and she failed a preliminary breath test. A lower reading showed 66 micrograms of alcohol in 100 micrograms of breath.
Defending, Dan Morris told the court that his client had been out for a few drinks with her family earlier in the day and had consumed approximately four or five bottles of beer. She had phoned for a taxi but it didn't come, so she took the decision to drive.
He submitted that McBrien was a 32-year-old woman, who lived with her family. She was a receptionist and had been driving for two years.
He said that she had learned a salutary lesson from her experience and the loss of her licence would have grave consequences for her. He said that she would be prepared to complete the drink driver's course.
Mr McNally imposed a £250 fine and a 12 month driving ban. He considered McBrien suitable for the drink driver's course, which, if successfully completed and her fine paid, would reduce her ban by three months.
