School radio project in Lisnaskea reaches across the United Kingdom

A radio project, written and performed by pupils from two Fermanagh schools, will be broadcasting across the UK next week.

'Broad Bandits' is the name of the radio project starting on Monday next, 24th November. Running for one week, young children across the UK will be able to listen into a range of programmes, written and performed by the pupils from Moat Primary, Lisnaskea and St Mary's Primary, Newtownbutler.

With the help of expert tutors in drama and music, the pupils will devise, write and perform a range of radio programmes to be aired for other primary schools across the UK.

The theme of the programmes will be, 'Life for Young people in Fermanagh Today'. Several organisations are helping to realise this innovative project, namely: Any Bright Ideas, Ossia Music and Red Balloon.

Majella Flanagan, Co-ordinator with Any Bright Ideas is the fund-raiser and co-ordinator for the project.

She explained: "We thought that radio would be a great way for young people who live in rural areas, to talk about their lives and to look at difference in cultures, past times, ideas.

"A podcast will accompany the project and, as most schools today have access to internet, I have invited other primary schools to listen in and give feedback to the programmes. The aim is to chat about what it is like to for school children to live in Fermanagh, in other parts of the province, as well as across the rest of the UK."

Broad Bandits will run as a pilot project and will surely help put local school children on the path to a career in radio internet broadcasting. It is funded by the Integrated Education Fund.
