A part-time shop worker who stole cash from his employer has appeared before Fermanagh Magistrates Court where he faced two charges of theft.
Conor Martin (20), from Carrowshee Park in Lisnaskea pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing cash from Sandra Swift of Swift's Supervalu in Lisnaskea.
The court heard that on 12th March, police spoke to the owner of Swift's Supervalu in Lisnaskea who told them additional security, including CCTV, had been put in the office and that it had detected a member of staff taking 60 euro in cash from the office.
The CCTV footage showed the defendant taking something from an envelope, putting it into his pocket and leaving.
When the defendant was asked about the theft, and was searched a 50 euro and a 10 euro note were recovered which matched the serial numbers of the missing notes. The notes were recovered from the defendant's sock.
When questioned he said: 'That's the first time - that's why they were in my sock'.
The defendant was also questioned about the theft of £90.
Defending, Garry Smyth said the defendant was of previous good character and acknowledged this conviction would adversely affect the defendant's reputation.
The solicitor described the defendant as a part-time worker in this store who had succumbed when temptation presented itself.
"This is a mistake he regrets," Mr Smyth added, and one that had brought shame and embarrassment to his decent and hard-working family.
Mr Smyth said his client lost his job over this incident. He was now completing a course he hoped would lead to third-level education.
District Judge Liam McNally told the defendant that he had breached his former employer's trust, and warned him he had done irreparable damage to his future employment and career prospects by this.
The defendant was sentenced to 200 hours community service and ordered to pay £90 restitution to Sandra Swift.
