The Sallaghy Mother's Union (MU) Branch, Lisnaskea has linked up with Lisnaskea High School in a bid to reach out to the local community and discover a need which could be filled as a branch activity.
Earlier this year, each Branch of the Mothers' Union received details of a Diocesan Project and Sallaghy Branch decided to take up the challenge.
Being aware of the number of foreign workers in the area, and the number of children entering the local primary and secondary schools who did not speak English as their first language, it became apparent that there was a need for English tuition for children and their parents if they were to cope with life in Fermanagh and become contributors to the local economy.
Through David Rees, the Principal of Lisnaskea High and Colin O'Callaghan, Head of Modern Languages, the branch was able to establish a link with a family who had recently moved to the area from Slovakia.
Two children from the family attend Lisnaskea High School, Mark, the younger boy, is in Year 10 while his brother Joseph is in Year 11.
Sallaghy Mothers' Union aimed to raise enough money to fund additional English tuition for the boys which they did through the selling of Quiz Sheets, raising £298, and a coffee morning that raised £965.
The total amount of £1,263 was handed over to Mr Rees to fund the additional English tuition for Mark and Joseph. The tuition has now been underway for about six weeks and is being delivered by specialist TEFL teacher Colleen Brennan, who is a Millennium Awardee from UnLtd.
