The movie 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' is a fresh new comedy all about being dumped by the woman of your dreams.
Brought to us by Judd Apatow - the same guy who brought us recent hits 'Knocked Up' and 'Superbad' - this film takes a refreshing look at the romantic comedy and makes fun of this 'slight' movie genre.
This is not only a movie about getting dumped but it's a movie for those out there who have been dumped and might not have seen the funny side of it - not, of course, that there always is a funny side.
It's a movie about getting your heart broken and then falling apart before finally learning to pick up the pieces and get on with your life.
It's also a movie about being in love with the wrong woman and then finding the right woman and a whole lot of other romantic stuff played for some decent crude (and rude) laughs.
Jason Segel (who also wrote the film's script) plays Peter Bretter, a TV theme tune writer with big ambitions who is madly in love with TV actress Sarah Marshall (played by Kristen Bell).
Like Peter Sarah has bigger ambitions than the silly cop show she stars in and dreams one day of becoming a Hollywood actress.
We learn that Sarah hasn't exactly treated Peter well during their relationship - she often seems to forget he's there and treats him more like a skivy than a boyfriend - although Peter is 'so in love' he can't see the wood for the trees, as it were.
ANOTHER MAN
After five years together Sarah announces she is leaving him for another man.
The fact that Peter is naked when she dumps him should give you some idea of the level this film operates at and, of course, how vulnerable Peter has left himself to Sarah.
Post-Sarah Peter seeks solace the arms, and beds, of many other women but nothing seems to provide him with any closure from the girl he adored. He also goes through a bit of a nervous breakdown at work (played here for laughs, as you might expect) before decided that a holiday is what he needs to get away from his problems and so he goes on an exotic holiday.
Unfortunately, Peter manages to find himself in the same hotel in Hawaii that Sarah and her new lover, Aldous Snow, are staying in.
ROCK STAR
Aldous, a over-sexed British rock star, is played with some energy by comedian Russell Brand. Brand is one of these 'love him or hate him' characters, and as I fall heavily into the second category it will take more than a solitary movie appearance - albeit quite a decent one - to change that opinion.
Naturally, seeing his beautiful ex-girlfriend in a variety of bikinis isn't exactly going to help poor Peter forget about how much he loved her, neither is seeing her cavorting and canoodling with her 'hip' new boyfriend.
COCKTAILS
But, somehow, amid a haze of cocktails and some palm trees and sunshine Peter manages to flirt with Rachel, a pretty hotel receptionist (played by Mila Kunas) and all of a sudden things don't look so bleak for the downtrodden Peter.
'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' carries a '15' certificate - which mostly is for the occasional nudity and numerous sexual references - and is a funny, if often crude, comedy which should appeal to many.
As well as the main characters there are also roles for Apatow regulars Paul Rudd (surfing dude), Jack McBrayer and Jonah Hill.
