Brewster Park will be back as venue for Fermanagh football and home base for Enniskillen commencing this Friday evening when the Gaels entertain Derrygonnelly Harps in round two of the SFL.
There had been speculation in recent weeks that the redeveloped ground would be available to the Gaels prior to the headline occasion that is the upcoming Ulster championship clash with Monaghan on May 25th. Enniskillen, it was known, were keen to have the official baptism as part of their own club schedule and pitch contractor Joe Pat Prunty has given the go ahead.
There had been a sliver of doubt due to the relatively cold April just past which had hampered grass growth to a certain extent. But in the end this has not turned out to be a major problem.
Enniskillen secretary Fionuala Donegan commented that the club, " was more than delighted to be back on the ground. We are extremely pleased with the way things have gone and hopefully a little warmer weather over the next few weeks will bring the pitch itself to its best possible condition."
Buoyant days then for the Gaels as they look ahead to be back full time on home sod, their last match here being over 20 months ago in September 2006. They have also opened the new league season with an away win, indicating that they intend to be a presence in this summer's league campaign.
Last Sunday brought the club scene at last back to the forefront and practically all of the games played in both divisions of the league were to be well matched affairs.
Current league holders Belcoo opened their defence of the silverware with a one point home win over promoted Tempo and it took late scores in the remaining games to secure wins for Teemore, Newtownbutler and Devenish.
In the second division there were to be narrow squeaks for the pre season favourites Irvinestown and Roslea, so this division has offered up the enticing prospect of being more than just a routine two horse race.
Meanwhile the county minor team has had a busy challenge programme over the past few weeks, three games in all being played, with the opposition being Mayo, Cavan and Roscommon. Last of the trio was on Friday in Kinawley against Roscommon, the game ending in a draw. In the other games there was a victory over Cavan in Breiffni and a draw with Mayo in Ballina.
Team performances have been encouraging and with a number of individual players running into a rich seam of personal form, there is quiet expectancy in the camp that progress can be made on the provincial scene.
There will be no further challenge matches prior to the meeting with Monaghan and with most players currently occupied with their senior club sides there will be no training session organised this week.
