The generosity of a popular Enniskillen-born opthamologist, who until her untimely death at the age of 36 last December, was based in two hospitals in Glasgow is now actively honoured in fund-raising for cataract camps in Africa that she had intended working in this year, carrying out eye tests and operations free of charge.
The late Dr Fiona Dolan was a daughter of John and Chrissie from Derryargon, Enniskillen and was based at the Southern and Gartnavel hospitals in Glasgow from where her consultant colleagues travel to Africa on charity missions.
She herself was listed to go out this year as one of four opthamlogists to carry out 200-plus cataract operations over 10 days. The Dolan family has organised a fund-raising dance in aid of the Fiona Dolan Fund on Thursday of next week, 15th May in The Delany Rooms, Mahon's Hotel, Irvinestown. The band, Country Traditions, will provide the music.
No target has been set, but each £5,000 raised will pay for the travel and subsistence costs of four opthamologists to operate in two cataract camps in Africa to do the 200-plus procedures.
Dr Dolan's father, John explained that, already, the Cavanacarragh Community had contributed to the fund which had been set up in his daughter's name: "We set up the fund in her name to generate funds into a cause which was close to her heart. In fact, she had intended to go out to Africa to a cataract camp. She was always very interested in using her medical skills to help people in poor countries'.
