Much has been spoken about Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), for and against, but the reality is that the system is about to be launched in Enniskillen, covering its entire length.
The hope is that the seven cameras will help reduce the level of crime, while at the same time, make the town feel safer for locals and tourists alike.
Their primary aim, to reduce crime and incidents of anti social behaviour in the town centre, will find unanimous. No Monday morning passes without evidence of same, usually where too much drink and/or drugs are involved.
For too long now, the streets of our towns have been taken over at week-end night time by young thugs, leaving people afraid to walk the streets of their own town, never mind the tourists. Statistics in other areas covered by CCTV estimate that having CCTV in an urban centre reduces crime by up to 30%. It's a statistic that's worth emulating here, and not alone in Enniskillen but also in Lisnaskea and Irvinestown.
The one fear is that those who previously felt free to assault complete strangers in Enniskillen or break plate glass show windows, will transfer their attention to other towns. But, the opportunity is there for their business people too.
