COA .......................................3-14
NEWTOWNBUTLER ..................3-10
Opening game of the season for Coa and the O'Dwyer's were to start with a victory in what turned out to be a high scoring contest with Newtownbutler.
Both attacks were to be on song during the sixty minutes and scores were to arrive on a regular basis but in the end it was Coa who just had slightly the sharper cutting edge and they were to generally hold the lead throughout the hour. They were a point clear at the break and when they hit a second goal ten minutes into the second half they were on their way to the win. But Newtownbutler were never to be out of the hunt and their forward line was to keep shooting scores that kept their hopes alive right to the closing minutes.
There were to be two goals registered in the first half the first falling to Coa, Darren McQuaid driving home a forceful shot. Newtown were able to answer this with a strike from Luke Weaver. Points for Coa had been supplied by Darren McQuaid who was to be one of the game's more prominent figures, with other scores coming from Leon Carters and Eoin Donnelly.
For Newtown, Sean Monaghan and the lively Luke Weaver hit the target.
No shortage of goals in a free flowing closing thirty minutes. For Coa, Darren Rodgers was the leading light as he bagged two. His second goal arriving a few minutes from full time, the full forward punching home the score that effectively killed off the Newtownbutler challenge.
But prior to that, Newtown had been pressing hard. They had their second goal of the evening from Sean Monaghan on fifty minutes and Liam Donegan was on hand to stab home a ball which had rebounded off the woodwork on fifty five minutes.
That goal gave Newtown hopes that they could get something from the contest but in the end it was Coa who squeezed out the win.
For Coa, Mark Coalter was an effective corner back in a sector which had it's difficult moments, Darren McQuaid pulled the strings around the middle of the park and Darren Rodgers took his goal opportunities well. For Newtown, Andrew Heuston was solid at full back, Michael McDaid worked hard in the centrefield area and up front, Sean Monaghan and Liam Donegan impressed.
