DEVENISH .........................................................1-11
BROOKEBORO ....................................................0-9
Devenish finished with five points to spare over Brookeboro but the home side were a trifle flattered by the extent of their win. They were to score what was to be the game's only goal in added on time and this gave them the apparently comfortable margin.
It was still a merited success for Devenish however for in the main they were to be the better balanced side and they were to look the stronger side once they had overcome their initial indifferent play in the first quarter.
Brookeboro had opened with a brisk purpose and it was they who made the early running and they moved into a two point lead at one stage but from the second quarter onwards they were to lose their way and in truth they were much too dependent on the scoring touch of the experienced duo of Niall Rooney and Kieran Donnelly.
Rooney and Donnelly chipped in with two points each in Brookeboro's promising opening, scores a mixture of placed kicks and shots from play. Devenish had been out of sorts but gradually they buckled down to the business and they were to gain an upperhand as the half edged towards the break. They struck over five unanswered points to hoof themselves into the lead on a scoreline of seven to four. Barry Mulrone led their scoring charge with three successful frees and other scores came from Terry O'Flanagan, Ciaran Mulrone and Sean Burns.
Thoughts of a Brookeboro revival were dampened when Devenish hit another bright patch of scoring that jumped them well ahead. Scores in this period came from Mulrone who had the responsibility for the place kicking.
Niall Rooney had a score for Brookeboro and they worked hard to keep themselves in touch with Rooney and Donnelly both on the mark again but they could never bridge the gap and Devenish always shaded matters.
The result was to be put beyond all doubt in injury time when Jason Love struck home the goal and the game's final score was to be a consolation late point for Brookeboro rifled over by the dependable Kieran Donnelly.
For the winner's Jason Love at half back had a fine match with veteran Sean Burns, initially at midfield and latterly at centre back a mainstay while Barry Mulrone and Terry O'Flanagan were among the more consistent up front.
For Brookeboro, full back Paddy Mohan was a sterling presence, Shane McGeehan was steady at centre back but further up the park it was a less successful story.
