Police in Enniskillen are urging the public to be vigilant following a number of burglaries from vacant properties over the last number of weeks.
A PSNI spokesman reported that offenders had been targeting copper pipes and hot water cylinders in particular and that several houses had been left waterlogged as a result of pipes being directly ripped out of the water heating system. Community Safety Officer Sergeant, Gary King advised all property owners to ensure that their houses are kept secure and to take necessary precautions if leaving properties vacant for any length of time. "By following simple steps like locking all doors and windows, installing a burglar alarm and outside lighting, you can make it harder for burglars to strike. If property is likely to be vacant for any length of time, then arrange for a friend or family member to check on the property on a regular basis." Sergeant King said he was also concerned that with the colder weather setting in, there could be the temptation for 'opportunists' to siphon heating oil from domestic tanks. Use sensor lights to brighten up dark areas around your home and, particularly areas where the oil tank is sited as this will help to deter those engaged in heating oil thefts."
