CAPTURING on camera the richness of Fermanagh's landscape and the talent of its photographers, this new exhibition at Enniskillen Castle Museums celebrates 25 years of the Enniskillen Photographic Society.
The exhibition, consisting of 50 photographs, is on show from this Thursday until January 8 2010.
The Enniskillen Photographic Society was founded in March 1983 by an enthusiastic group of amateur photographers. The original purpose of the society was to provide "instruction, amusement and education in photographic work." The same ideals continue to be upheld today.
Founding members of the society include Pat Lunny, Anne Cassidy, Harry Weir and the legendary Shay Nethercott.
Over the years, the society has organised numerous exhibitions and competitions, as well as nurturing the creativity of its members, highlighting current practice and photographic technique.
Throughout its existence, the society has recorded the life and times of County Fermanagh. This exhibition is a stunning selection of some of the society's photographs from its earliest days right up until the present. Examples include Albert Bruce's image of Castle Island (1986), Derek's Preston's 'Pub in Derrygonnelly' (1997) and David Robertson' s evocative photograph, 'Dawn at Gad Island' (2009).
Sarah McHugh, museum manager said, "The museum is delighted to highlight the work of the Enniskillen Photographic Society. The local society has contributed so much to the creativity of the County in the last 25 years. I am sure that the exhibition will be enjoyed by all, as well as prove to be an inspiration for any budding photographers.'
Stephen Hetherington, chairman of Enniskillen Photographic Society, said: "Enniskillen Photographic Society remains committed to its original aims. The society continues the tradition of promoting and encouraging the pursuit of excellence in photography.'
'Celebrating 25 years of the Enniskillen Photographic Society' is officially opened by a founding member of the society, Anne Cassidy, on Thursday, 12 November at 8pm. The chairman of Fermanagh District Council, Councillor Bertie Kerr, will also be present.
