The Lakeland Canoe Centre held the Enniskillen Canoe Polo Cup on 4th5th August. Despite this competition only being in its second year, the number of entries was excellent with 27 teams from all over Ireland and Scotland taking part, making it the second biggest canoe polo event in Ireland.
The competition started on the Saturday morning at 8.15am with the opening ceremony. The paddlers gathered at the side of the Lakeland Forum and paddled their kayaks to the front of the Canoe Centre with Gavin Huey leading the way in the police boat - 'The Lady Grey'.
At 9.00am all three divisions started the rounds, which continued all day with a 6.00pm finish, just before the rain started. Over 150 competitors who took part in the competition went into town to sample the local night life and food.
On the Sunday morning, the rain was heavy, but it didn't dampen the spirits of the paddlers. The quality of competition meant that there was no way of predicting who would make it to the semi-finals. The sun came out just as the semi-finals started and those teams that had been knocked out of the competition lined the shores on both sides of the pitches to cheer on the remaining teams. So tight was the competition that a lot of the games went to extra time.
The competition was deemed a great success and the talk of next year's event has already started.
A huge thanks must go out to all who supported the event. Thanks to Gavin Huey for opening the event; to Waterways Ireland for supporting the event; and to the Ulster Canoe Polo teams for their help with the planning and organisation during the event. Special thanks also to Keith Cullen and Fermanagh District Council for their encouragement and support, especially in the lead up to the event.
