Local girl Laura Hutton, from Mullaghmeen, was a member of the Northern Ireland Tetrathlon team that won the Regional Tetrathlon held in Fermanagh over the weekend.
Tetrathlon is a four-phase event with competitors shooting, swimming, riding and running, with the points from each phase being totalled to give a final score. The competition held at the weekend was organised by the Pony Club, and ten girls teams and eight boys teams from across the UK and Ireland took part.
Laura was selected to be a member of the Northern Ireland girls team at the Northern Ireland Area Tetrathlon competition held in July, when she finished in second place.
At the regional competition, the Northern Ireland girls were lying in third place after the shooting and swimming. They moved up to second after the riding phase, which was held at Necarne Castle on the Saturday, and after the running phase on Sunday, they had secured the winning team score of the ten girls' teams.
Laura finished in individual ninth place from 57 girls, starting with a score of 800 for shooting, and then swimming a massive nine lengths and five metres in the three minute swimming phase. She went on to ride a clear round in the cross country event on her mount 'The Vagabond' with only ten time penalties, and finished the competition with a very good run around the 1,500m cross country track in five minutes 58 seconds, in very soggy conditions.
Simpson Cochrane, the organiser of the event said, "We are delighted that when this competition is held in Northern Ireland, local athletes have had such success. The teams in this competition were selected as the best in each region in the UK and Ireland, and the months of training of NI girls has paid off with them winning and being awarded the trophy."
Laura and her horse are travelling to England later this week to compete in the National Tetrathlon Championships, in Warwickshire.
