Devenish slip up in derby meeting

ERNE GAELS ...............2-10

DEVENISH ...................1-7

Erne Gaels came into this derby clash having already secured their entry into the first division semi finals. Devenish on the other hand needed a win to guarantee their qualification, but the Garrison side were to come up short and they will have to be content with a bid to claim the second division crown.

Devenish were to go in at the break leading by a point but they had been showing signs of faltering in the lead up to the interval. Their goal had come at the end of the first quarter, Joe O'Brien slamming home a penalty and that score had jumped them three points clear. But they had been unable to force their way further in front and Erne Gaels began to ease themselves into the picture.

O'Brien had been the main threat for Devenish in their attack but Erne Gaels had been better balanced up front with their six point response supplied by Sean Sands, Ronan Cox, Ryan Lyons and Brian Mullin.

On the changeover it was Erne Gaels who were to gain a hold on matters. They had most of the second half attacking play and they duly worked their way in for the goals that earned them a deserved success. It was to be quite sometime however before the first of these goals arrived.

The threequarter mark in fact, this coming from Martin Kilfeather who had his initial shot blocked but the spill went back to him and he tucked away his opportunity. Goal two which effectively killed off any lingering hopes that Devenish may still have entertained that they could come out on top.

This goal was a poorly conceded one from Devenish's point of view as they allowed a speculative punt from far outfield to bounce into their net. Sean Sands who had a fine game overall was to fire over a trio of second half points for Erne Gaels and in the end this was a solid win for the Belleek team. For them Paul O'Shea was sound in the full back slot and in the respective corners, Rossa Cullen and Oran McCann did well. For Devenish, Joe O'Brien was easily their most alert forward with Gavin Gallagher also featuring and Thomas Treacy did good work in goal.

Tempo through in the end

TEMPO .......................2-11

BELCOO ......................2-8

Tempo had to win this tie and also hope for a favourable result elsewhere if they were to qualify for the first division semis. They duly achieved this having done their part by beating visiting Belcoo in what was a very lively and fast paced contest played in excellent conditions.

The exchanges swept from end to end with lots of well taken scores and the standard of play was always of good standard.

Belcoo made the early running and in the first quarter they had a snappier look as they raced in for some neatly taken points. Tempo did respond with a couple of scores from midfielder Niall McCusker but the home team was to be seriously at fault when they conceded a goal on sixteen minutes.

They more or less fell asleep defensively and Belcoo midfielder availed of this loss of concentration as he smashed home a close range free kick which opened up a four point lead for his team. It was a lead which Belcoo were worthy of but they failed to capitalise on their strong position and by the time the interval was reached, Tempo had stolen in front.

They had done so thanks to a two goal burst both scores fired in by corner forward Seamus Bogue and with Bogue also chipping over a point the home side led on a scoreline of 2-4 to 1-5.

On the resumption Belcoo bounced back with quick scores tossed over by Ronan Ferguson and Jonathan Feely but again they were unable to forge on from there. Instead it was Tempo who increasingly looked the superior team and they went on to establish a sizeable lead with points taken by Ryan Ingram, Seamus Bogue and Niall McCusker.

With time running out Tempo had motored five points clear but a gaffe by their goalkeeper Matthew Jackson gifted Belcoo a goal which was put away by Jonathan Feely.

This made for an exciting finale with Belcoo now chasing a snap winning goal but the final score was to go to Tempo, an insurance point from Niall McCusker. McCusker was to be one of the top marksmen for the winners with full forward Oisin McCann a dependable target man at full forward and in defence, Ross Moohan, Ciaran Flanagan and Aiden Breen all played consistently.

For Belcoo, Ronan Ferguson and Eunan Mullally did well in attack, the Leonard twins were again a potent force and Brian Cox had his moments in the middle of the park.

Not played

The game between league leaders Irvinestown and bottom placed Belnaleck was not played the latter unable to field a team.

Qualifying for the first division semi finals are Irvinestown, Belcoo, Erne Gaels and Tempo.

The bottom trio of Enniskillen, Devenish and Belnaleck will now contest the second division semi finals, they will be joined here by Roslea who have topped the second division table.
