'Bridge on top

MAGUIRESBRIDGE ............ 0-17

TEMPO ............................. 1-10

After their opening day league defeat, Maguiresbridge registered their first win in the Erne Cup division one league when they produced a lively display to dispatch neighbouring Tempo.

The winner's attack was to enjoy a fruitful sixty minutes and they landed a sizeable tally of scores over the course of an entertaining contest and they were to be well worth their victory in the end. Tempo had opened on a rather sluggish note and by the end of the first quarter they had slipped four points adrift.

The Maguires were to steady the ship somewhat thereafter but they were never to make serious inroads into the lead which the 'Bridge had established. At the break the leaders were five in front and in fact they were to stretch further ahead as the second half progressed.

It was not until quite late in the game that Tempo registered their goal and by that stage the contest had been securely wrapped up by the leaders. For Maguiresbridge, Conor Hyde had a very effective match operating at corner back with Andrew Breslin also shaping up well in this sector.

Elsewhere in the Maguiresbridge lineout, Robert Johnson and Mark Gavin stamped their mark in a forward line which delivered a neat and tidy performance overall. Gavin had an especially bright contribution with a stream of scores dotted throughout the match.

As for Tempo, John Owens worked hard at full back and centre half Stephen Cox was another to feature prominently with Gabriel Dunne and Damian McCaffery also having their moments further up the park.

Maguiresbridge were to be quickly into their stride and they soon had their scoreboard ticking over with points knocked over on a regular basis.

They hit five inside the opening quarter and had ten on the board by the interval. Among the marksmen as well as the prolific Gavin, were Shane Ingram, Andrew Breslin and Liam Maye. Answering for Tempo were Niall McCusker and Stephen Cox.

More of the same pattern in the second half though Tempo did manage to edge a little bit more into the game but the 'Bridge were always comfortable and it was not until close to the end that Tempo grabbed their goal, Shane McDonald putting away the chance that popped up for him.

Referee Pat McGurn Derrygonnelly.
