Three year old burns victim loses her fight for life in Dublin hospital

Three year old Rebecca Johnston, from Enniskillen who sustained serious injuries when her dress caught fire from candle flames at her home on 11th December died in intensive care unit in Our Lady's Children Hospital in Crumlin yesterday afternoon.

The little girl, who lived with her parents at Cappog Road, just off the Sligo road, Enniskillen had been transferred to Dublin as there were no beds available at the specialist unit in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

Her uncle, Niall Johnston, who spoke to the 'Herald' on Monday, revealed that Rebecca had undergone a successful skin graft operation in which skin was removed from her uncle Gary's leg and grafted on to her front.

"She is still sedated, so her condition hasn't changed much since I was last talking to you before Christmas, apart from the skin graft which has been completely successful".

Therefore, news of her death yesterday was unexpected as well as shocking.

The family have already paid tribute to the excellent work of the paramedics and the staff in the Erne Hospital to where the little girl was rushed from her family home at Cappog Road.

An ambulance arrived at the family home within six minutes.

Likewise, the family were happy with the way things had gone thereafter: "We're glad she's in Crumlin now because it's supposed to be one of the best burns units in Europe. We were happy she made it the length of Dublin, and we're very happy with the team down there'.
