IRA threat to drug dealers

A male caller, purporting to speak on behalf of the Fermanagh brigade of Oglaigh na hEireann, and using a previously unknown codeword, warned that drug dealers, naming three, who, the statement claimed, are active in the Enniskillen area will be dealt with in an appropriate manner.

The statement which was dictated to a member of the editorial staff of this newspaper, read as follows:

'In recent weeks, it has been brought to our attention of a campaign of abuse and violence by drugs dealers in the Enniskillen area in particular. This campaign involves approaching the parents of drug users demanding money they are owed or otherwise using violence, intimidation, whatever to them and, possibly, damage to property.

'These actions are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Our investigation into this matter has unearthed these names (here, the caller names three males, adding, 'to name but a few').

"These people will be dealt with in an appropriate manner. We are also investigating dealers throughout the county.

"We would finally add that all civilians disassociate themselves from members of the security forces as it is for their own safety'.

The caller then gives the Codeword and the statement is signed, 'On behalf of the Fermanagh Brigade of Oglaigh na hEireann.

The statement was telephoned to the 'Herald' office on Monday morning of this week.

A PSNI spokesman, reacting to the statement, advised against anyone taking the law into their own hands.

'The ongoing battle against illegal drugs is a major priority for Fermanagh police. They acknowledge the concerns of the local community about drug dealing and the support and information that local people give to help tackle it.

"Due process of law must be the proper way in which such activities are tackled. No one should take the law into their own hands .

"By continuing to support the police, local people can make a difference. By providing information and evidence, they can help remove from society those who would prey on individuals caught in the spiral of drugs use. Threats and violence, from whatever quarter, are not the answer. Those who deal in drugs must be caught and punished through the courts."
