Behind the Name

www.behindthename.com

Ever wondered what your name meant and where it originated? If you have and you are curious to find out more, then log onto behindthename.com.

This website aims to present you with the definitive resource for learning about given names. It presents etymology and the history of first names in an easy to use medium that is easily accessed the world over.

Etymology is the term given to the study of the origin of words, to find out more about it click the 'About Etymology' link on the home page. The database behind this site currently contains 15,141 names in total, 7,557 masculine names, 6,891 feminine names and 793 mixed gender names.

The names that populate this database originate from the United States, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Sweden and Belgium. It's an impressive collection.

There is also an impressive list of namesakes (a person who has the same name as another person), which range from Emperors, Kings, Queens, Sports Stars and Oscar Award winners. It's a site worth looking at.

The PC Guide

www.pcguide.com

Don't be put off by the appearance of this site, amateur design is not always indicative of a poor site. This site will help you to learn all there is to know about computers.

Charles Kosierok, whose aim is to present a premier site for detailed PC reference information, created this site. Unfortunately in some sections it doesn't look like it has been updated in a while, however it contains some invaluable information nonetheless.

If you would like to know more about how a PC works, get into PC Fundamentals and dabble with motherboards, system BIOS, memory and processors then this site will give you the inside track.

Like I said snazzy layout isn't the site's strong point, but at least it's fast. Intended as a reference source, the information contained at The PC Guide is not aimed at helping you solve a problem, it's for those who want to learn more about how a PC works in quite some detail.

Collect Britain

www.collectbritain.co.uk

The British Library who has now put a large proportion of their valuable collection online for you to view without leaving home has brought you this site.

The library's curators have "carefully selected maps, manuscripts, topographical drawings, photographs, rare sound recordings and even long-forgotten advertisements and music-hall songs" which have been imaginatively grouped into Collections, Virtual Exhibitions, and Themed Tours.

Although not yet complete (the site is still in its testing stage), "you can view and hear a staggering 100,000 images and sounds" within the pages of CollectBritain.co.uk. Listed Virtual Tours include Durham: Echoes of Power, Literary Landscapes and Grimm's Northumberland Sketchbooks.

Featured Theme Tours include, Lost Gardens, The Old East End and On the Hig. Collections currently displayed include, Military Alert, On the Waterfront, The way we Speak and Very Illuminating.

If it's education you are after, then it is education you will get. This site is an intriguing, information site, bursting at the seems with education and enjoyment.
