St Michael's made to work in close contest

ST MICHAEL'S ............... 1-12

ABBEY CBS .................... 2-7

This two point success for St Michael's over Abbey CBS, the game played in Clones on Thursday, earned the Enniskillen college their qualification into the quarter final knock out stages of the Brock Cup.

They will now play St Macarten's, Monaghan, later this coming week to decide on their exact position in the sectional table.

Foundation of the victory was to be laid in the opening half, the period when St Michael's were to deliver their best football of the hour.

With a somewhat depleted side on duty, St Michael's had made a hesitant enough beginning and they conceded an early goal, Abbey midfielder Fergal McAvoy working his way in for the score.

But St Michael's were to be able to shrug off this setback and for the remainder of the half it was they who generally dictated matters.

They made up the leeway with points from Brian Owens, Stewart Connors and Sean Corrigan but the crucial score of the half as far as they were concerned was to be the answering goal.

This was notched by Owens and it gave St Michael's an impetus for the rest of the contest. Not that it was ever a comfortable ride for the Enniskillen team.

They were to have their hands full in fending off a determined Abbey rally which grew in intensity as the match moved into the final ten minutes.

Second half points for St Michael's had been knocked over by Ruairi Corrigan, Stewart Connors and John Joe Strain, but Abbey ensured that it was to be a tingling finale as they pressed hard for scores in a hectic climax.

The Newry college were given a terrific fillip with their second goal of the afternoon, this one hit home by Rory Keenan.

But with Aiden Breen turning in a sturdy closing effort in the St Michael's midfield, defenders Ciaran McGoldrick at full back, Stephen Nolan at corner back and Louis Leonard at half back, the team held out for a hard earned win.
