SCREENONLINE
WWW.SCREENONLINE.ORG.UK
This website is the British Film Institute's definitive guide to the British film industry. ScreenOnline.org.uk is an online encyclopaedia of British film and television featuring hundreds of hours of film and television clips from the vast collections of the BFI National Archive, and several hours of recorded interviews with film and TV personalities.
Access to the single most extensive publicly available resource devoted to British film and television is entirely free.
However access to the audio and video content is limited. The only locations eligible to register for (free) access to Screenonline audio and video material on their premises are UK schools, public libraries, colleges and universities.
The timeline of British Television is a particularly interesting read starting with the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria on 22nd June 1897 to Business Secretary John Hutton ordering BSkyB to reduce its 17.9% holding in ITV to 7.5% on 29th January 2008.
The timeline is designed to give you an at-a-glance view of the key events in the history of the moving image in Britain.
