Three-year-old burns victim laid to rest

The funeral took place on Friday, from Rossorry Parish Church, Enniskillen of three-year old burns' victim, Rebecca Johnston who lived with her parents, Gary and Wilma and her sisters, Victoria and Hannah at Cappog Road, Drumgallon near Enniskillen.

Two weeks prior to Christmas, the little girl suffered extensive burns when her dress caught fire from a tealight candle in the family home. Her mother sustained burns to her hands as she frantically tried to douse the flames, and the emergency services were called.

Paramedics arrived within six minutes and Rebecca was rushed to the Erne hospital where she was stabilised in the A & E Department before transfer to the Burns Unit in Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin near Dublin. She would have been taken to the Royal but there were no beds available at its specialist burns' unit.

All over Christmas, the little girl's parents kept vigil at her hospital bedside and, back home, her uncle, Niall gave updates on his niece's condition. The last bulletin given out before her peaceful death in Crumlin hospital on Monday night of last week was that Rebecca had successfully undergone a skin graft operation.

The funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners, and the burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Rt Rev Archdeacon Cecil Pringle officiated.

CLARIFICATION

In last week's edition we stated that Rebecca got a skin graft from her uncle Gary. This should have read, 'from her father Gary'.

We regret the error.
