It defies logic that, given Fermanagh's wealth of tradition when it comes to music, song and dance and, sense of celebration.
That it can be done, and done well, there is no doubt, hence the disappointment of last year's empty streets when, it seemed, all around smaller towns and villages were doing their bit. Roslea apart, it might not have amounted to much, but at least there was an acknowledgement. The Roslea parade, embedded on traditional crafts unique to the area, was excellent, so good in fact that people wanted more.
It has to be admitted, of course, that they do parades much better down South. That's the reality and it will remain that way until and unless someone grasps the nettle and convinces others, 'what they can do, we can do'.
It would, of course, make things easier if the two communities could jointly organise the parade. After all, St Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, so he can be 'shared'. Too often, parades in his honour are perceived as 'owned' by one side or the other.
In the meantime, that doesn't help Enniskillen's situation. Is there anyone out there willing to take on the job? The District Council, which will help out with the funding and in other ways, awaits.
