Fermanagh manager, Malachy O'Rourke was understandably beaming after his sides victory on Sunday. The Derrylin native was delighted with the performance put in by his side and shared his thoughts with the gathered scrum of media;
"We came here expecting to put up a big performance and we're delighted with how it went. We got the goals at the right time (3rd and 55th minutes). We had every faith in the players. We knew that they would perform well. It was a case of taking our chances and not doing anything silly".
In their last competitive game, against Wexford in the Division 3 final, Fermanagh conceded three bad goals. However, the manager utilised that defeat to turn the spotlight on frailties in the rearguard, and, so, he had upbeat words to say about the defence this time around.
"I thought our defence was strong all through. We didn't give away many frees, which is a big thing because they have two very good free-takers. We didn't concede any goals today, and things just worked out well for us".
Monaghan manager, Seamus McEneaney by contrast looked like a broken man when he finally met the press;
"Very disappointed. We seemed to lack intensity. A very disappointing performance and we conceded two very bad goals but, in fairness, we weren't at the races for long periods. Fermanagh should have beaten us by more. I felt we had prepared really well for the last five weeks from the Westmeath match.
"Everything was very good. We didn't see this coming because we were in great shape at training. And things were going really well. But, we knew the task was going to be very difficult coming here today with the opening of Brewster Park and Fermanagh very well prepared under Malachy O'Rourke. This is a changed Fermanagh team. They were a good bit better than us today".
The manager dismissed any notion that Monaghan under-estimated the opposition.
"No way. Motivation wasn't an issue. We felt we were really motivated for the game, although that doesn't explain what we have seen in the last 75 minutes''.
