One unexpected result and the second division has taken on a very interesting look.
That result was the home defeat of Roslea to St Josephs and that has certainly opened up possibilities for the rest of the relatively short twelve match campaign.
In the chase for promotion in such a sprint, teams cannot afford to drop too many points. Those two points dropped by pre season promotion favourites has put the Shamrocks under pressure even though there is still ten games to be played. In their opening match they scrambled their way to a nervous win over Erne Gaels so at the moment, it could be said that the alarm bells are ringing in the Roslea camp.
On that kind of form, Roslea would appear to have their work cut out and with two games with Irvinestown, a return bout with St Josephs and a couple of outings against a menacing Kinawley team, Roslea have to be very careful indeed.
They have just the one match this double weekend but it has potential of being a banana skin for they make the short trip down the road to closest neighbours Aughdrumsee.
The latter may not be the strongest team in the division but there will be no questioning the fact that they will be up for this particular clash.
So Friday evening is a tricky encounter for under pressure Roslea and they really need to win this one.
Irvinestown on the other hand have made the anticipated bright start though they had to work hard to fend off their derby rivals, St Josephs. The league leaders have just the one match on their agenda, a Sunday afternoon meeting with Kinawley.
A victory here for Irvinestown would strengthen the belief that they are going to be the dominant team over the programme.
For Kinawley who had a less than impressive first appearance win over Erne Gaels, this weekend is a defining one.
They open on Friday with a home tie with Derrylin, always a tight battle here and then they travel to Irvinestown.
Two very difficult games for the Brian Boru's and should they fail to make appreciable headway then their promotion challenge will have been left stalled in the starting blocks.
Meanwhile, St Josephs thanks to their rousing efforts against Irvinestown and Roslea will be hoping to build on that with wins over Erne Gaels and Aughdrumsee, both fixtures on their home Ederney turf.
Early days still of course but already there are crunch ties on the schedule for a second division which may well pan out considerably different than expected.
