ST MICHAEL'S ....................................... 1-12
ST PARTRICK'S DUNGANNON ................. 2-12
A goal in each half paved the way for this Dungannon two point victory over St Michael's in the Brock Cup, the game played in excellent conditions at Augher early last week. Thus the East Tyrone college continues to be a bogey side for Enniskillen this season having already defeated Corn na nÓg and MacRory teams from Drumclay. Always a tight contest at Augher, just two points separating the teams at the break, Dungannon leading on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-7.
Their goal had arrived at the end of the first quarter. They were awarded a penalty and they duly claimed a goal but it was a rather fortunate score. The initial kick was parried out by St Michael's goalkeeper Brian McAleer who did exceptionally well to do so, but the rebound was to fall kindly to place kicker Keith Morgan who stabbed home the score.
St Michael's had first half points from Sean and Ruairi Corrigan, Mark Blake and Chris Ferguson, these scores coming on a regular basis but in the second half they were to find it a shade more difficult to breach the Dungannon back division.
A second Dungannon goal this one coming some ten minutes into the half put the leaders in a more comfortable position and from that juncture onwards they took on the look of being the likelier winners. St Michael's were to have points from the Corrigan duo and from Mark Blake but as the game progressed it became more and more evident that if they were to advance to the next round of the competition, they would need a goal to make a dent in the St Patrick's lead.
That goal was finally served up some five minutes from time, substitute Rory Porteous homing in on the opportunity which eventually cropped up. This was followed up by a point from midfielder Blake, his shot just clearing the crossbar.
St Michael's now had the sniff of a recovery and came close to snatching it but they were penalised for a technical offence and Dungannon had survived a late tremor of anxiety.
For St Michael's the top figures in the defensive set up were the central players, full back Kieran McGoldrick and centre half Louis Leonard. Up front the main attacking thrust was to be provided by Sean and Ruairi Corrigan who formed a neat right wing partnership.
