Call for more civil servants jobs

Eighteen out of every 100 people employed in Fermanagh are working in the Public Sector. This is according to figures released recently by the Department of Finance and Personnel. This figure places Fermanagh very much in the middle of the league table of the break-down on Public Sector workers across Northern Ireland. Not surprisingly Belfast and the surrounding areas topped the poll. In Belfast 53.2% of people are employed in the public sector; Castlereagh comes next with 32.1%; and then Antrim with 31.1%. More surprisingly perhaps is the fact Omagh comes fourth in the league table with a hefty 30.8% of people taking their wage from the Public Sector, this places the Tyrone town higher than Derry (29.9%); Armagh (23.8%); Craigavon (23.5%); and Coleraine (21.4%). The figures were released following a call from SDLP Assembly Member, Declan O'Loan, and has led to calls from an MLA to relocate many of the civil services jobs outside of Belfast. Sam Gardiner, MLA, said while the statistics are influenced by people who commute to Belfast from the surrounding towns, there is still a huge disparity in the distribution of public sector jobs.
