The Sanctuary of Lough Derg is a uniquely special place of peace, offering generations of visitors from Ireland and beyond an opportunity for rest, a haven away from the daily grind. Legend has it that Patrick himself sought out this serene Donegal Island as a place of contemplation and prayer.
It seems appropriate then that Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten journey towards Easter, be celebrated on Lough Derg, a place traditionally associated with reflection and simplicity. The Island provokes a sense of Christian heritage and, so an Ecumenical Day of Friendship and Prayer aims to allow people from all churches to come together, united by their Christian faith.
This year's guest speaker will be Rev. Dr Ruth Patterson of Restoration Ministries, Belfast.
Dr Patterson was the first female Presbyterian Minister in Northern Ireland. Today, her ministry focuses on helping to overcome the barriers created by the Troubles in the North, building a sense of reconciliation and renewal, issues never as important today in light of the optimism surrounding the new political stability.
"Attitudes", she explained, "are changed eventually by the building of relationships, by a willingness to be open and vulnerable, by inviting someone who is different across the threshold of one's life, and to risk enough also to step across theirs,".
Such a notion of reconciliation and growth is synonymous with the real meaning of pilgrimage for the many who have experienced Lough Derg. An element of healing exists, a reason perhaps for its continued popularity today.
Deborah Maxwell, the Manager of Lough Derg, herself a Presbyterian, joins with the Prior, Monsignor Richard Mohan in extending a warm welcome to all. Most Reverend Joseph Duffy, Bishop of Clogher will also be in attendance and extends a welcome to sister Churches.
"As members of the Christian family, we see Lough Derg, as a place that helps us to get close to the person of Jesus Christ," he said.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Ecumenical Day and can register by phoning Lough Derg on 028-68632391.
Boats for the event will run from 10.30am with the event beginning at 11.30am. A light lunch will be served afterwards.
