BELCOO .......................... 0-15
NEWTOWNBUTLER ...........1-10
Chalking up their third straight victory this was an easier success for league holders Belcoo than the final slender two point margin might suggest. They had led all the way from the outset and in the second half they had strengthened their hold on the game as the lame Newtown challenge failed to pick up any sense of urgency.
With the full time whistle beckoning, Belcoo had pushed six points clear and had the contest secure before Newtown did manage a late flourish that narrowed the deficit.
But the Newtown goal which came deep into added on time and came much too late to affect the outcome.
Another breezy performance from Belcoo in a game which however never got any bite into it. Leading the Belcoo effort was John Carrigan who was to finish with a personal tally of eight points and Carrigan was to be swiftly off the mark, hitting his team's first two points.
A third was added by Brian Cox before Newtown at last got going with a successful placed kick from Colm Monaghan and Monaghan was to be the player who chipped in with the bulk of the Newtown scores over the remainder of the hour.
Brendan McBrien and Barry Connolly had further scores for the First Fermanagh's prior to the break with Carrigan and Declan Leonard answering for the home side who led by two on the changeover.
In the third quarter it was Belcoo who resumed with a fine flourish of scores that effectively closed out the game for them. Brian Cox, Paul McGrath and John Carrigan all hit the target as the home side enjoyed a bustling spell of pressure.
Ryan Carson stalled the Belcoo run with the first Newtown score of the half and a second was added before another spree of Belcoo scores had the gap separating the teams well extended.
Newtown were to have three of the game's final four scores including their fisted goal but it was far too late to be of serious consequence.
For the winning side who certainly have an eager look about themselves, Niall McGovern did well in the defence with John Carrigan and Brian Cox featuring in the attack.
As for a Newtown side who failed to impress, Ryan Carson laboured hard in the midfield area and Colm Monaghan was sharpest up front but the current county champions need to raise their game if they are to be a force over the coming months.
