ST JOSEPHS .................... 2-12
AUGHDRUMSEE ................. 1-4
For the opening quarter of this tie the game was to be fairly evenly pitched with visiting Aughdrumsee, though they failed to score, appearing to be competitive enough.
But things were to radically change in the fifteen minute spell leading up to the break, for in that passage of play, St Josephs went on a scoring spree which effectively ended the game as a contest.
By the time that the interval was reached, the Ederney team had catapulted themselves ten points clear and Aughdrumsee were staring into the face of their second defeat of the weekend.
Aughdrumsee were to manage just a solitary point in what had developed into a very disappointing half for them, that score coming from a Ryan Boyle free five minutes before the break.
Watching it all was Jarlath McSwiggan who was scheduled to officially take charge of the St Josephs squad later in the week. A proven track record with Drumquin whom he steered to a high profile position in Tyrone, McSwiggan will presumably have been pleased with the quality play delivered in the enterprising lead up to the interval.
Meantime St Josephs who had Enda Ferris among their early scorers had now careered well ahead. Ferris, Peter Gormley and Michael McAleer were all on the mark for them with McAleer pouncing for the goal which put the seal on a solid first half effort.
Aughdrumsee though they were never to really put serious pressure on the runaway leaders over the final thirty minutes did succeed in gaining a more reasonable share of the possession and play was in the main more evenly distributed.
Points for Aughdrumsee were to come from Ryan Boyle and Mark Leonard but they had to wait until five minutes from time before their sturdier effort was rewarded with a consolation goal. This was penalty strike fired home by Ryan Boyle.
St Josephs, understandably perhaps with such a comfortable lead, had not reproduced the fire and sparkle that they had demonstrated in the purple patch of the second quarter.
But they still worked through for scores and their fine team effort was crowned by a second goal from livewire corner forward Michael McAleer to leave them comprehensive winners at the end.
For the home side, wing half back Aaron Dennison had an especially fine match and advanced forward for a couple of scores, Martin McGrath and Chris Snow generally controlled the midfield area.
