Education Minister to open Irish medium schools in Lisnaskea

The Education Minister, Caitriona Ruane, who is a fluent Irish speaker, is due in Lisnaskea next Tuesday, 17th June to officially open two Irish medium schools on the edge of the town, at Drumbroughas North just off the Maguiresbridge Road.

They are the Naoiscoil an Traonaigh, the pre-school nursery and the Bunscoil an Traonaigh, the primary school which are brand new facilities on a new site that allowed their transfer from their previous site at Emmet Park on the Derrylin Road.

Sean Ó Loinsigh, speaking for the Board of Governors for the two schools, said the event would mark an historic occasion: "Not least for all those who have worked hard on this project since 2001. From humble beginnings in the Emmet GAA clubrooms, we have now moved to a brand new site at Drumbroughas North for two separate buildings".

He went on: "It's also going to be an historic occasion because Fermanagh was the last county to have an Irish language school, and that's one of the reasons why the Minister wants to be there to officially open them".

He reported 'a huge interest' locally in the Irish language and, for that, he commended the Board of Governors and the parents who had sent their children to one or other of the two Irish medium schools.

"We would encourage everybody", Mr Ó Loinsigh added, " who has an interest in the Irish language, in Irish culture and in bi-lingual education and in diversity to join with us in this project. It is wholly recognised by the department of Education, the Western Board and by Social Services".
