At a special assembley recently in the Collegiate Grammar School, Diana Barton, Head Girl, and Emma Johnston, Vice-chair, School Council, presented Getachew Tesfay from Operation Rescue, Ethiopia, with a cheque for £751.
This amount was the proceeds of the retiring collection at the school's Festival of Carols and Lessons on 18 December 2007, along with an amount raised by the School Council from their sale of fruit kebabs at breaktimes.
Getachew, along with Marciano and Christina Teixera who founded the organisation, then brought staff and pupils up to date with the work of Operation Rescue among street children in Mekele, Ethiopia.
Pupils and staff have been pleased to support the work of the centre since they heard about it from Miss Kate Doherty, former Principal, who has volunteered at the centre on her visits to Makele.
