Killyfole Development Association is using a novel approach to reach all sections of the local community. The Association has received funding from the Community Foundation of Northern Ireland through Sport Relief to introduce petanque or boules to the Killyfole area.
The funding will allow the construction of a boules terrain or bouladrome adjacent to lay the firm gravel area required for play, and an opening ceremony will be held when the work is completed.
The game of boules consists of payers throwing a steele ball to see who can land nearest a small wooden jack. Most popular in France, the game is also played throughout mainland Europe. Competitions are held regularly with over 50 countries competing in the last world championship.
"This is a great game for bringing people together," a spokesperson for the group said.
"It can be played by absolutely everyone from nine to 90, language is not a problem, and it is a wonderful way to relax on summer evenings."
The group hopes to have some regular players demonstrate the finer points of play at the initial launch and sets of boules will be available for those wishing to try their skill.
