IRVINESTOWN .............. 0-10
ENNISKILLEN ................. 0-4
Irvinestown eventually booked their passage into the quarter finals of the 'A' minor championship when they produced a strong finishing surge to dispatch committed Enniskillen in this replay played in damp conditions at Tempo.
Irvinestown were in the end deserving enough of their success but for periods in this match they looked ill at ease. They took a long time to settle but were to go in at the break leading by three points.
They appeared to have fended of the determined Gaels challenge but in the third quarter, Irvinestown were again to falter and Enniskillen dominated to the extent that they trimmed down the deficit to just a single point. With the impetus with the Gaels and Irvinestown now looking bedraggled an upset was in the making.
But the favourites eventually steadied themselves and they delivered an upbeat final quarter performance that yielded a five point sequence of scores to leave them comfortable enough in the end.
Part of the problem for Enniskillen was that they lacked a real cutting edge in attack and all of their five points tally was to be supplied by wing half forward Kirk West.
West was to open the game's scoring and in what was to be a very low scoring opening ten minutes. A Joey Miller point levelled for Irvinestown but it was to be the second quarter before there was to be an improvement in the scoring rate.
At last Irvinestown, thanks to a midfield diamond dominance provided by centre back Tiaran Daly, midfielder Paul Leonard and centre half forward Ronan Ormsby, pushed ahead with points knocked over by Liam Murphy, Chris Lyons , Ronan Ormsby and Lyons again.
Close to the break, an Enniskillen side who had lost a lot of their earlier brightness, did have a second point, West skipping nimbly through for a good score, but it had been Irvinestown who had dictated the quarter and they appeared to be in control.
But on the resumption, it was not the expected pattern. Instead Irvinestown went back into their shell and it was a rejuvenated Enniskillen who went on the offensive. Two points from West had the Gaels snapping on the heels of the leaders but they were never to bridge the deficit.
With ten minutes remaining, Irvinestown picked off their first score since the interval, a darting run from James Duffy paving the way for a Liam Murphy score. That score settled Irvinestown, they returned for another inside sixty seconds, Ronan Ormsby the marksman and the Enniskillen challenge was to fizzle out.
Irvinestown shot three more scores in a final surge which saw them regain firm command.
