IRVINESTOWN ........1-12
KINAWLEY .............1-5
Seven points in hand for Irvinestown in this delayed reserve B championhip first round match but it was not until the second half that the winners were to get a grip on this game. The opening half had seen Kinawley as the more enterprising side and they were to go in at the interval leading by two points. The leader's defensive set up had done a good job of work in curbing the Irvinestown attack, restricting them to a mere two points, those scores coming from Eamon McCarney and Rory Goodwin,
On the mark for Kinawley had been , Barry Maguire, Shay Keenan and Sean Crudden but on the changeover there was to be a distinct turnaround in the pattern of the game.
Now it was a rejuvenated Irvinestown who were to call most of the shots and they put increasing pressure on a Kinawley team who were beginning to lose some of their early sparkle.
Irvinestown were now looking sharper up front and their attack swung it's way in for a string of points that brought them into the lead. Among the marksmen for them were Francis Ward, Ronan Ormsby and Ryan Quinn.
They were headed for a second round ticket but before that was definitely secured there was to be one final bout of anxiety for them as Kinawley struck back for a goal. Noel Martin thumped home the score to level the sides and with the full final quarter still to go, the match was poised.
But the goal was the final shot in Kinawely's locker. They fell away in the run in and the exchanges were to be increasingly dictated by an ever improving Irvinestown team and they picked off points to ease themselves into a winning position.
Kinawley had been stumbling and were giving no indication that they had the capability of turning the game around. All hope for them evaporated when Irvinestown snapped up a goal from Rory Goodwin and the game slid to its conclusion.
For Irvinestown, David Turner did well in the back division, Francis Ward and Ronan Ormsby were best up front. For Kinawley, Gabriel McHugh in the half forward line, Aiden Clarke in midfield an Barry McManus in defence all worked hard on a team which began in sprightly enough fashion but which gradually faded out.
