Derrygonnelly press on

DERRYGONNELLY .......2-7

ST PATRICKS ...........1-6

The old failing of St Patrick's sides was much in evidence here with the Donagh team's forward line failing miserably to make adequate use of the multitude of scoring opportunities that came their way.

This was especially so in the second half, a mixture of poor shooting and lack of decisive approach play, eventually costing them the match.

Derrygonnelly, on the other hand were to be much more economical with their chances and on that score alone, they deserved to move on to the next round.

A goal in each half of course was also instrumental in fashioning the victory for the Harps. Their first major strike came early in the hour, Gerry Meehan on hand to fist home from close range in the fifth minute. It was a quick breakthrough which gave the Harps a solid platform for the remainder of the match.

They were to have first half points, half a dozen in all, Paul Greene and Patrick Murphy leading the charge here and they went in at the interval three points to the good.

St Patricks had been able to respond to the early setback they had suffered with points from Eamon McDermott but they had to wait until the 20th minute before they struck for their goal, this coming from Michael McGrade.

It had been a low scoring thirty minutes and the second half was to see the rate decline further.

Derrygonnelly were to manage just two scores but crucially one of these was to be a goal.

This came on forty minutes, John Murphy poking home in a goalmouth scramble and Gavin McGinley was to hit a point.

As for St Patricks they replied with a three points tally, Jason Cadden among those on the mark for them but this was really a miserable return for the amount of attacking possession that they had been presented with and they paid the penalty for this failure.

For Derrygonnelly,Ciaran Gallagher was an efficient full back, Niall Burns was an effective ball winner up front and Declan Cassidy plus Paul Greene showed up well.

For St Patrick's Colm Reilly was a sturdy defensive figure with Jamie Treacy a presence in the middle third of the park.
