Goals swing in for St Josephs

ST JOSEPHS ..............2-12

BROOKEBORO .............0-11

Two second half goals secure the passage onwards for St Josephs, the Ederney team then finishing with a surge which careered them to a convincing seven point success.

The win was a deserved one for them, since they had generally been the more nimble side throughout the contest, dictating matters for substantial periods.

The only spell of the hour when they fell under Brookeboro sway was in the ten minutes leading up to the interval. St Josephs had notched a number of first quarter points, Paul Gallogly, Declan McCusker, Donal Gormley and Michael McAleer on the mark for them and they had duly eased four points clear.

But they were then to lose their way somewhat and Brookeboro nudged themselves back. In what was to be easily their most productive period, Brookeboro popped over points from Fergal Boyle, Karl Green, Donal Boyle and in fact were to go in at the break leading by six to five, the lead point coming from a Sean Breen placed kick.

St Josephs levelled on the restart but Brookeboro came back with three scores, two supplied by Peter Mellarkey who was to be one of their few consistent figures and Donal Boyle who was to some neat moments up front, was to shoot a single.

This put Brookeboro three points to the good and momentarily it seemed that they had the ability to push on and claim the ticket through to the next round.

But St Josephs who had gone off the rails rejuvenated themselves, helped to a great extent by their first goal. This was a crisp effort from corner forward Conor McGrath and it hauled the side level. From there to the finish it was ever improving St Josephs who held command. Declan McCusker edged them in front with a point from a free and they stretched well ahead with their second goal, this one a low shot from Michael McAleer.

No way back now for a faltering Brookeboro, they did manage sporadic points but it was a convincing St Josephs side who were now much sharper and over the final minutes they added further points to be more than comfortable.

Referee Paul Campbell Tempo.
