The National Trust hosted visitors to swap stories and share memories of past school days at Crom recently.
Historian Vicky Herbert, who has already published a book about the history of the scenic Lough shore estate, lead the unique afternoon, recalling childhood memories at the Old Crom School. Visitors were able to listen to recollections of life on the estate in years gone by and memories of the School, which was open from 1820 1953.
The National Trust was delighted to be able to acquire the Old School House six years ago and has carried out essential maintenance work, whilst retaining that special character of a schoolmaster's residence and large open plan classroom for all pupils. The school rooms were be accessible on the day.
The afternoon included a spectacular cot trip to the school (weather permitting). Crom's traditional Cot, a flat bottomed craft used on Lough Erne is 100 years old and was used to ferry children from Inisherk Island and Derryvore to the school.
